Title:

UCI America Tour: Cuba and Uruguay host February racing

Date:

01.03.2010

Description:

Cuba and Uruguay hosted the events on the UCI America Tour calendar this month with the Vuelta a Cuba (February 9th – 21st) and the Rutas de America (February 16th - 21st).

Teams from Europe, North America and South America came to Cuba where it was the local champion Arnold Alcolea who took the honours for the second year in a row. Alcolea led the race from the 8th stage onwards, taking over the control from Ryan Roth, of the Canadian UCI Continental Team Spidertech Powered by Planet Energy. Spidertech claimed an impressive 6 out of 13 stage victories but missed out on a place on the overall podium, with Roth finishing in fourth place. Although the Canadians had solid sprinters and time trial specialists Alcolea was stronger during the mountain stages. With this second consecutive overall victory, he looks determined to emulate his compatriot Pedro Pablo Perez, who won the Cuban race six times.

Further south, in Uruguay, the overall victory went to the local athlete Herman Cline despite fierce competition from the UCI Professional Continental team Scott - Marcondes Cesar Sao José dos Campos (Brazil) and other teams from Argentina, Spain and the USA. Brazilian sprinter Luciano Pagliarini performed particularly well, taking three stage victories.

The new leader of the UCI America Tour is Spain’s Sevilla Ribera, followed by Nery Felipe Velasquez (GUA) and Gregorio Ladino Vega (COL), who loses his place at the top of the individual ranking. After his win in Cuba, Arnold Alcolea moves up from 40th to 5th in the UCI America Tour individual ranking.
